Join the New York City Coalition Against Hunger at the Bell House for free soup and bread!
Based at the Chicago club The Hideout, Soup and Bread is a free weekly dinner to raise money for local food pantries and hunger relief organizations. Each week local musicians, artists, teachers, firefighters, writers, barflies, and – yes – professional cooks donate pots of soup, which are dished up at the bar along with loaves of homemade bread. All the food is free, but the hat is passed each week, and over the winter of 2009 Soup and Bread raised almost $3,000 to benefit the Greater Chicago Food Depository.
Now the Chicago organizers are teaming up with local cooks at the Bell House to raise money for the New York City Coalition Against Hunger. They’ll also be selling copies of the new Soup & Bread Cookbook, which was named one of the top five Chicago cookbooks of 2009 by the weekly NewCity, and “A significant document on the importance of food and community” by the website Food on the Dole. The Good Fork’s Ben Schneider is on board; stay tuned for updates on who else is cooking at this Bell House installment of Soup and Bread.
