NYCCAH Alumn Speaks About Hunger on NewsHour

November 23, 2009

JC Dwyer, a former NYCCAH employee now with the Texas Food Bank Network, spoke on PBS’s NewsHour about the increasing demand for food seen in Texas and across the country.  This was right after the USDA released its annual report on food insecurity which found that 49.1 million Americans struggle to find enough food for themselves and their families.

USDA: 1 in 7 U.S. Households Struggle for Food

At some point in 2008, 14.6 percent of U.S. households had trouble finding food, a 3.5 percent increase from 2007 and the highest since the USDA has kept records.

This puts 49.1 million Americans in households that “had difficulty obtaining food for all their members due to a lack of resources,” according to the annual U.S. Department of Agriculture report. This includes 16.7 million children.
