Anti-Hunger Advocates Mark 9/11 with Service and Call for Ongoing, Strategic Volunteerism

September 13, 2010

The New York City Coalition Against Hunger joined with leading elected officials, faith leaders, and service providers this past Saturday to mark 9/11 by volunteering at the Father’s Heart Ministries soup kitchen in the East Village. They called on New Yorkers to honor that day by committing to provide skills-based volunteer work throughout the year in a strategic way to effectively fight hunger. Attendees included City Council Members Daniel Dromm, Rosie Mendez, and Annabel Palma, the Joint Chair of NY State Commission on National and Community Service, Susan Stern, and Corporation for National and Community Service State Director, Donna Smith.

State Senator Daniel Squadron said, “Participating in community service to help those in need is a fitting way to pay tribute to the memory of September 11 on this nine-year anniversary, just as it is necessary to remember those most in need throughout the year. I thank the New York City Coalition Against Hunger for today’s event and for their hard work in providing both immediate help for struggling New Yorkers and finding long term solutions to help families get back on their feet.”

Said Ms. Susan Stern, Chair of New York State Commission on National and Community Service, “The volunteers here today are using their energy as a force for good, for helping others and for rebuilding our communities. They demonstrate the best of New Yorkers and Americans. We encourage all New Yorkers to dedicate themselves to service and volunteering.”
