New York, NY – In the wake of drastic federal cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), commonly known as food stamps, Council Member Rodriguez will be keeping to a tighter budget this week – to demonstrate the extreme hardship that over one-fifth of New Yorkers face everyday. Starting today until Friday, September 24th he will spend only $4.33 per day on food for the first three days, and then the last two days he will learn to survive with only $3.75 a day – to reflect what it would be like when the federal budget cuts take effect.

“I am participating in this challenge because, even if we know the appalling facts and figures about hunger in New York City, we cannot truly understand what that means for each of the 1.4 million New Yorkers who go hungry everyday. Not even this five-day challenge can show you that – but we need to draw more attention to what it is really like to live in poverty.

I have not eaten yet today. Later, I plan to buy one dollar’s worth of plantains and some cheese, but I will have to wait until after work when I get home tonight to eat a real meal, if I can afford it, because food stamps cannot be used at restaurants.

Congress recently passed a bill that cuts funding for SNAP to fund other legislative priorities. While these other priorities are also important, we cannot continue to raid SNAP and hurt the millions who need this program to survive each day to fund other programs,” said Council Member Rodriguez.

Council Member Rodriguez will be making daily updates on his experience via Facebook and Twitter.

As of June 2010, New York State had over 2.8 million food stamp recipients, with more than half of those recipients living in New York City.
