Day 1, Thoughts from a Food Stamp Challenge Participant

September 21, 2010

It’s only Day 1 and I cheated. If a vendor takes you out for lunch, can you really claim you didn’t spend money on food? If you grab a bagel in the conference room at an afternoon meeting – don’t you have to add that in to the $4? A latte that costs $3.75 counts too. Which makes the grand total before dinner $25.

Food is everywhere in the corporate world. It’s available to the people who don’t need it. To the people who have the energy after the day to hit the gym after work to burn it off. And then spend again for dinner out.

Day 1 has already been a reminder that we’re very blessed. Very unaware of what it means to live off $4 a day. Very much in need of this week to understand what it means to lack, live and work in hunger throughout the day, and never have the assurance of the next meal.

I am taking the Food Stamp Challenge and the only way someone can survive using food stamps is if there is a Supermarket in their area. I work in Flatbush Brooklyn. The area does not have one supermarket for the needy to shop and purchase fresh veggies at a reasonable price. There are plently of Subways, Burger Kings, Dunkin Donuts, Wendys etc. but NO SUPERMARKETS! No wonder there is an obsesity problem in the USA.
